salience
April 1, 2004
And the idea is, it's all about people. Not individual characteristics or anything of that nature per se, but something more abstract. Everything can be reduced to a check list, itemized priorities of self-imposed schedules. But at the end of the day, satisfaction is derived from personal relationships: the web one spins to make her mark in the world, even if only a fugacious one.
Take classes for example. Professors hold positions where they are to teach material, and students pay the university to have material taught to them. But we are not this simple, mechanic. Internally both sides are hoping to make a difference, to affect someone else. Think about teachers who stay with you years after a class is over. Each left an impression in your mind because of the gift of a unique experience amongst the context of learning.
It applies in music as well. How can one paint emotion through sound in a group if all members aren't open to one another? There is a mutual trust that music is a collective art in this setting, and each instrumentalist is imperative to the formation of that sound. Years from now we won't remember the trouble with the intonation on the unison F at measure 128 in that symphony, but we will bask in the warmth of a fulfilling performance. Communication, translation. Encouraging a relationship not only amongst ourselves, but opening our arms to an audience together.
And now I find myself thinking about my business in these terms. We are still in the initial stages. And it would be an understatement to say that I am stressed. I sleep, but always there is this constant worry, fear. Anxiety. Can I really do this? I have to consciously let go of my OCD tendencies to obsess over details and keep the larger picture in mind. National Services Group has given me all of 01923. And even though I want to focus on the profit line, really throughout the next five months my job will be to build a relationship with Danvers, MA.
Like in everything else I do, I now have an opportunity to get to know each person and family, to be invited into each kitchen to sit down and talk about life. Background, school, interests--I will have access to all career and family situations through these people, and I can try each one on. I am painting their house, but they are lavishing me with advice for the future.
Follow your dreams, don't wait for someone else's permission.
There will always be someone who will go out of his way to be in yours.
I smile, absorbing all I can.
And when they have run out of words,
I thank them, sincerely, for their time.
And as I walk out the front door with their many ideas and plans,
I say, take care.
And I'll see you tomorrow.
