You tell yourself that two full days will suffice, that every second will count. The two half days before and after the two full ones will be a preamble and an epilogue to what life can be like. And those seconds do count, even in sleep. But it still isn't long enough, I am never ready for whoever has to leave to leave. We've given ourselves one night to mope and then it's chin up, we'll see each other soon. He will focus on school and I am back to work in the morning. My project will be finding a shelf to mount for all of the fuzzy memories he gave me this past weekend. I now have quite a collection (including a Penguina! From the Shedd Aquarium y’all). We laugh and tease each other and it just makes me wonder if this is what contentment feels like. I am always myself, but when he is with me I am all myself. There is no shallow façade for other people, no anthill that’s become a disaster, no fire drill crisis of someone else’s laziness I have to pay attention to. I can’t ever remember before being with someone with whom I can talk so easily, we carry on to such an extent that silence usually only happens when we’re eating. And I know, Clara Smith says you’re not supposed to advertise your man, ‘cause that’s the quickest way to lose him, but sometimes I just can’t believe we’ve come so far. He called his parents, as usual, when I was there and it’s natural: his parents on speakerphone and his mom telling us she’s just “too old for that superman movie, jeepers it’s long, when will it end?!” Asking when are we coming out to Vegas next and how is everything going?? It almost makes those tears at the airport worth it. But no, it doesn’t change how much I miss him.
