I'm beginning to think there's an unwritten rule about Cambridge, UK: the sun cannot shine for longer than an hour at a time.
This is quite the dreary place. It's cloudy, rainy. Mildew and moss. Everything has a faint green tinge here, almost a patina.
It reminds me of that Lewis Black skit, "It was so gray, I wanted to slit my wrists just to see some color."
I'm halfway through my third full day here. And the trip was worth it. Despite my flight being delayed an hour out of JFK friday night, despite being detained by customs at Heathrow for an hour and a half due to a rejected work visa last autumn (I was told by a recruiter to apply for the wrong visa it turns out: I applied one for those who already have local work), despite a three hour bus ride from Heathrow to Cambridge.
I'm very much playing housewife to el prometido. He goes off to work in the mornings and I go to the local gym and then am on my on to wander and explore until he is done for the day. Things here are about the same price as NYC, and I'm finally getting used to all of the coinage. And the accents, oh the accents. I get funny looks at most stores I go into, my nondescript american accent is a novelty.
The place Ry found for us to share this week is a second floor apartment of a townhouse near the city center. Now that we know how appliances work in this place (read: the boiler), I'm much happier. It's cold here, and our first night here I couldn't feel my extremities. We have access off of the cobblestone street through a numeric keypad. We have a nice little kitchen and a full bedroom. The bathroom is a closet reminiscent of the bathroom of my Bronx apartment years ago. There's even a tv with a total of about four working channels. Needless to say, I've been listening to a lot of Brit Top 40 by default the past couple of days.
I still have the majority of the week left for this visit. And it's much needed, definitely. It's so soothing to finally be in the same city as Ry. Free from my work and rehearsal schedule, which has been pretty hectice for the past few months. Despite the years we've spent in separate places, I'm happy to see the end of our separation drawing nearer and nearer. This trip serves as one of the few remaining milestones we have to reach until the book on our separation closes for good.
