salience

Yesterday I got the chance to volunteer in the Rockaways, a neighborhood in Queens that was wiped out by Sandy. It was a humbling experience, there is so much need, so close to one of the richest islands in the country. I was able to hand deliver food and supplies to those who are home bound, 18 families in all. People do not realize that this peninsula is as wide as Manhattan is long. I didn't see any Red Cross or FEMA on the ground while I was there, which is contrary to what their tv ads would have you believe. I wasn't able to take too many pictures, but here are what I did take.
